# Cost objects (KOST2)

> Enable cost objects, create them, group them, and filter reports by them

The cost object (KOST2) is the second cost-accounting dimension alongside the cost center (KOST1). Fyvel takes it from your DATEV bookings and, once it is enabled for a company, makes it available as master data and as a filter in reports.

### Enable cost objects

Cost objects are hidden by default. You enable the feature per company under **Settings → General → "Cost object (KOST2)"**.

After you enable it, you see:

* the **Cost objects** item in the sidebar under "Reporting master data",
* the cost-object filter in the report toolbar and in the row editor,
* the **Cost object** dimension in drill-down.

<Note>
  The cost object is stored on every import, whether or not the feature is enabled. Bookings imported before the feature existed do not contain a cost object. In that case, upload the affected periods again.
</Note>

### Create cost objects

Open **Cost objects** in the sidebar and click "Create cost object":

| Field | Description |
| - | - |
| **Cost object (code)** | The code from the accounts, up to 36 characters (for example "PROJ-2026-A") |
| **Name** | A readable name (for example "Hamburg new-build project") |
| **Description** (optional) | A short explanation of what the cost object is for |

Unlike cost centers, the code is a text field: DATEV also allows letters and special characters in KOST2.

Use the pencil icon to edit a cost object and the trash icon to delete it. Master data applies across the organisation.

### Cost-object groups

On the **"Groups"** tab you bundle several cost objects under one name — for example every project in a business unit. In the report filter you then select the group in one click, instead of ticking each cost object.

A cost object can belong to several groups. When you filter, a group is expanded into its members. Groups and individually selected cost objects can be combined.

### Filter reports by cost object

There are two levels, and they work independently:

* **Whole report** — via the cost-object filter in the report toolbar ("All cost objects"). The filter applies to every row, is kept in the URL, and is stored with saved views.
* **A single report row** — in the row editor under "Cost objects (optional)", per data source. No selection means: all cost objects.

Both filters combine with the cost-center filter as an AND condition. If a cost-object filter is active, bookings **without** a cost-object assignment are excluded — the same as with the cost-center filter.

### Drill-down

In the drill-down dialog you can select **Cost object** as a dimension and break report rows down by it. The stored name is shown next to the code. PDF and Excel export include the drill-down as usual.

### Tip

First create the cost objects you actually want to report on, then group them.
